Seeding social change
Using an innovative social entrepreneurship model, the Nollywood Workshops seeds sponsored films by providing grants for film production. The goal for all participants is to create high quality, entertaining films, while at the same time incorporating important “edutainment” themes.
Local problems, local perspectives, local solutions
Nollywood filmmakers will choose issues that matter to them. Themes will include corruption, HIV/AIDS, ethnic strife, child malnutrition, women’s empowerment, and others. Themes will be identified in collaboration with local and international NGOs, and developed in stories and scripts during the Nollywood Workshops.
Public-private partnerships
Production seed grants will be awarded on a competitive basis, with the balance of funding for production and distribution coming from Nigerian filmmakers, producers, and distributors. The seed grants ensure edutainment themes and storylines are effectively embedded, while private funding demands the films have great entertainment value and mass audience appeal.
Getting the word out
The Workshops support filmmakers in using the mass media to get the word out about issues that are important to them, while supporting a promising, home-grown Nigerian industry to reach its highest potential for making exciting, relevant, high-quality films.
